Current Research Topics

The Department of Social Medicine at the Hirosaki University was established since the days of the predecessor, Professor Shigeyuki Nakaji, with a focus on health promotion, human resource development related to health promotion, and sports medicine. The Iwaki Health Promotion Project that Professor Nakaji initiated has evolved into a core project of the Hirosaki University Center of Healthy Aging Innovation. In addition, health promotion leaders, who are residential volunteers, who have been entrusted by Hirosaki City, are engaged in various activities in the community. Taking those as important legacies of the department, the Department of Social Medicine continues to develop through expanding the following research field and deepening it along with the research so far.

  • ・Epidemiology, particularly of depression and dementia in elderly
  • ・Mental health
  • ・Aging health
  • ・Theory and practice of health education
  • ・Environmental health
  • ・Community health
  • ・Occupational health
  • ・School health
  • ・Medical ethics

In addition, the Department of Social Medicine participates in the Iwaki Health Promotion Project and Ikiiki Health Examination (Japan Prospective Studies Collaboration for Aging and Dementia(JPSC-AD)) and strives to actively disseminate the results. In addition, with the Health and Labor Sciences Research Grant, we are conducting a research aimed at building evidence on treatments for depression and apathy in people with dementia, in collaboration with Fukushima Prefectural Medical University Aizu Medical Center, Yamagata University, and Tohoku University. We are also actively engaged in joint research with the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, Hiroshima University, Waseda University, and various companies.

Our doors are always open to interested students and researchers for a visit to learn about our various activities and/or collaborative work.
