Introduction

Our research efforts are focused on basic and clinical science in anesthesia, pain control medicine and intensive care medicine. We have diverse research interests ranging from neuroendocrinological approach for examining the mechanism of anesthesia to clinical investigations for improving outcome in patient with critical illness, which have been published in high quality biomedical journals. We are also invited to publish review articles every year in these journals.

Another effort has been concentrated on the international exchange. International collaborated studies have been carried out with University of Leicester in England, Imperial College London in England, University of Ferrara in Italy, University of Nice in France, Hannover Medical School in Germany, Harbin Medical University in China, etc. In addition, we have had close relationship with the following universities in terms of education and research; The University of Glasgow in Scotland, Pusan National University in Korea, Washington State University and University of Texas in the USA, etc.

Overview of Our Research Program

A) Anesthesia

  • Clinical Pharmacology Research Group: Clinical pharmacology of total intravenous anesthesia with propofol, ketamine, fentanyl and remifentanil.
  • Clinical and basic research of ultrasound guided peripheral nerve block
  • Clinical research of acute normovolemic hemodilution
  • Anesthetic Mechanisms Research Group: Various neuronal system and mechanism of anesthesia and postoperative delirium/cognitive dysfunction including noradrenaline, dopamine, orexin, urotensin II, etc.
  • Clinical research of postoperative delirium/cognitive dysfunction including biomarkers and virtual reality
  • Clinical research of anti-depressant effect of ketamine
  • Immunology Research Group: Implication of anesthetics on inflammation and cancer-suppressing process

B) Pain medicine

  • Pain Research Group: Correlation between salivary biomarker activities and pain stress
  • Basic research using various chronic pain models
  • Assessment of monitored anesthesia care for high-dose-rate brachytherapy for cervical cancer
  • Approach to elucidate effect of ketamine on treatment resistant depression
  • Assessment of ketamine effect on cancer pain and depression
  • Measuring effect of VR prehabilitation on prevention from post operative delirium

C) Intensive care medicine

  • Metabolism Research Group: Assessment of body fluid volume using initial distribution volume of glucose
  • Validation of postoperative bleeding prediction using point of care testing
  • Respiratory and Cardiovascular Research Group: Application of transesophageal echocardiography for diagnosis of hemodynamic instability and acute respiratory distress syndrome
