Introduction of facility

The Institute for Animal Experimentation is a research-supporting organization and all animal experiments at the Graduate School of Medicine are primarily conducted at this facility. The facility provides advanced research and education using high-quality laboratory animals. The animal rooms are maintained at room temperature (23 ± 3 °C) and humidity (50 ± 10%) throughout the year to minimize the environmental effects on the outcome of the animal experiments. Approximately 10 staff members attend to the needs of researchers, including a full-time instructor and a Level 2 experimental animal technologist.

As a research facility, we have infectious animal rooms and safely maintain not only infectious animals and genetically modified animals, such as transgenic and knockout animals, but also immunosuppressed animals. We also have individually ventilated cage systems, laminar flow racks, and other equipment to prevent the animals from developing infections. At the facility, studies of pathological conditions using animal disease models, such as heterogeneous grafting, diabetes, high blood pressure, and correlation between infection and cytokines, are conducted diligently on a daily basis from both basic and clinical perspectives.
